Ashlee Evans-Smith is set to return to the cage for the second time as a professional, this Friday at CFA 11. This fight is part of CFA’s 145-pound women’s tournament. In the semifinals, Evans-Smith is set to face Anna Barone. Only aware of her basic stats, and having seen a few of her fight videos, Evans-Smith feels she has prepared appropriately for the fight. She said, “I’m not too concerned about what she brings to the table as much as I am focused on going out there and doing what I know I’m capable of.”
Over the past few years, women’s MMA has grown drastically and has become more mainstream. The former face of WMMA Gina Carano has crossed over into acting; while the new face Ronda Rousey is landing ESPN covers. Evans-Smith is also seeing the benefits with the rise in popularity. “There are more promotions we can fight for which means more chances to travel, bigger pay checks, and more exposure (and recognition) and the ability to do what we love.” (more…)
Garcia Promotions returns to the Humble Civic Center (and Friday’s) May 17th. Like with most amateur cards, there are TONS of fights scheduled. But I’m sure more than half will fallout between now and weigh-ins.
As of now, there will be two title fights. In the main event, Trevin Giles will be defending his middleweight title against Chris Sutton who is coming off a 24 second submission win at Cage Combat 13. This will sure be an entertaining fight. Also, Tony Orozco Jr. and Craig Campbell will be facing off for the featherweight title.
There are critics of everything in life, especially when it comes to sports. It doesn’t matter if it’s basketball, football, or even MMA, there are critics. These critics couldn’t be any louder than when it comes to women’s sports. There are people who feel that women can’t compete at the same level as men; for whatever reason, they simply don’t have the same skill level or athletic ability. Look at two of the most popular sports, basketball and football. Both genders compete in these sports, but when it comes to women playing them, some say they might as well not exist. (more…)
Legacy Amateur Series is set to bring Houston June 8th for another great amateur card. As with all amateur cards, it starts off with a ton of fights and eventually it dwindles down to somewhere around 12-15 by fight night. In the main event, we have Chris Rivera and David Acosta facing off for the 125 title. That is definitely a fight you don’t want to miss.
After watching all the fights at UFC 159 leading up to the Main Event between light heavyweight champion Jon Jones taking on Chael Sonnen, many were thinking, including myself, what else could go wrong? Well after all the eye pokes and broken thumbs, the main event didn’t let us down with a bizarre moment. What seems to be Jon Jones pushing off his left foot, his big toe snaps under the pressure something similar to a small branch.
Most MMA fans have heard of Fallon Fox recently. She or he is the fighter that had his or her bing bong chopped off and wants to fight against female MMA fighters. Now before I go any further I would like to say, I have no problem with gay people or transgenders, I think everyone has the right to get married and spend the rest of their days in little marriage prison. I also have thought of a clothing line for transgender people called “Misstache”, so save all your “he hates gay people” comments for yourself. I’ve even once been checked out by a gay guy, and though I was a little grossed out I also was a little flattered. (more…)
I had a chance to talk with the very talented Bebe “Killher Bee” Laced before her Muay Thai fight this Saturday in Muskogee, OK.
MC: So who is your opponent now? I know it’s changed a couple times recently? BL: I am now fighting my original opponent, Shahin Khadir from Manitoba Canada; at a catch weight of 115lbs which is 10lbs heavier than our original weight. My opponent has been changed twice and the matchmakers at Striking promotion have done their part and more to make this fight happen for me. It’s a shame that fighters sometimes make it hard to do so. (more…)
Before I get started on this article I am going to go against everything I have learned in all my mass communications and journalism classes and say I am fan of Royce Gracie. Not just a normal fan, this guy was my child hood hero; my brother Mike and I broke so much furniture trying out the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu moves I saw Gracie do back when you had to rent the UFC tapes. I didn’t even know what Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was but I was trying it, there on my living room floor trying to be exactly like that 170 pound Brazilian man in a gi that was submitting all these guys twice his size.
