Bet On Black: Alex Black Is Ready To Roll At Legacy 27

Legacy Fighting Championship will be kicking off 2014 with its first show at The Arena Theater, January 31st. Headlining the event will be Artenas Young and Tim Means, with 11 other fights on the stacked card which will be televised on AXS TV.

One fight on the main card, will be Alex Black (5-3) taking on Charles Cheeks (7-2) in an exciting lightweight bout. Both fighters are on winning streaks, with Cheeks winning his last 6 fights and Black finishing his last 4 opponents. Black will be one of several 4oz fighters stepping in the cage that night; and will be looking to start the new year off with a win and extend his win streak. I caught up with Mr. Black to discuss his upcoming fight.

Mark Carrillo: How has training been coming along for your fight?

Alex Black: Really good, I’ve changed a few things up for this fight camp that has really helped me to be able to stay healthy, lose weight properly, and train more.

MC: 3 of your last 4 wins have come by submission; Cheeks has a few submissions on his record as well. How do you think your jiu-jitsu will hold up against his?

AB: I think my jiu-jitsu will be better than his; I know he will be strong on the ground, but that’s okay.

MC: What will be your game plan on fight night?

AB: That’s something that everyone will have to wait and see. It will be an exciting, and fast paced fight.

MC: How do you prefer to end a fight? Submission or KO?

AB: As long as it ends with my hand raised, then I’m happy.

MC: What is your mindset like on fight night?

AB: I’ve been very focused. I’m just ready for the 31st to be here.

MC: What do you do outside of fighting?

AB: I co-own OSS Combat Productions; and non-work related, I am a very outdoors kind of person. I like to surf and wakeboard when possible. I love the river so I spend a lot of time out in San Marcos in the summer also.

MC: You don’t seem like an intimidating person at first glance. Anyone ever try messing with you outside the cage? Any subs or KO’s in the streets? (Laughs)

AB: I haven’t been in a street fight in close to 5 years. I don’t like fighting outside the cage; only way I will is if it’s the only way to get out of a bad situation. But the last fight I was in, I did choke the guy out with a triangle.

MC: Anything you would like to say to Cheeks before the fight?

AB: No not really. He seems like a good guy and I don’t like to talk much before a fight.

MC: Who would you like to thank for helping you prepare for this fight?

AB: All my coaches and teammates. Master Zulfi Ahmed, Bob Perez, Daniel Pineda, Gerzan Chaw, Justin Reiswerg, Jose Santibanez, Mick Maynard, and all the rest of the guys at 4oz and Bushi Ba; and Sammy Robinson over at Plex for getting my strength and conditioning on point.
