It was reported a couple of weeks ago that both Kimbo Slice and Ken Shamrock had failed their pre-fight drug test, prior to their bouts at Bellator 149. Bellator 149 took place February 19 in Houston, Texas, and was overseen by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR).
When the news broke about the failed drug test, the exact substances that Slice and Shamrock tested positive for were withheld. Through a public records request with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, I was informed that Slice tested positive for the steroid nandrolone, and Shamrock tested positive for a synthetic version of methadone. Methadone is an opioid medication, commonly used to treat individuals addicted to a narcotic. I am to assume his use was because he’s fighting at the age of 52, and is in constant pain. It is also noted that Shamrock was also flagged for an elevated testosterone-to-epitestosterone (T/E) ratio of 12:1. The cutoff levels in Texas are 6:1, and 4:1 according to WADA.
Both men have been suspended by the state, pending an adjudication process, and will be fined up to $5,000. No word yet on what Bellator’s response will be to this matter. I was told that they were not notified of the failed test originally. Stay tuned for an update on what the final actions against the fighters will be.
