Before the opening bell of Fury 7, there was all kinds of trouble brewing with the card. At the start of the weigh-ins, there were 12 scheduled fights. After weigh-ins, there were 10 with the possibility of 11. By the time the event started, there were only 9. Artenas Young and Chris Rose was scrapped because Young was late to weigh-ins, and Rose didn’t want to wait any longer, so he just left. Domingo Pilarte and Landon Ackel were scrapped because Ackel simply no showed. He led the promoters to believe he was in route to Houston, but he never actually left. The day of the fight, John Haydon versus Angelo Anzaldua was called off after a stye was found in the eye of Anzaldua, during pre-fight medical exams.
The first 7 fights ended with a finish of some sort. Madison Johnson and Aaron Valdes opened the card off with a crazy back and forth fight, but Johnson would catch Valdes on the chin and finish with strikes, seconds before the end of the first round. EJ Turner would earn his first win against Stephen Pena. Pena was never able to get going in the fight. Turner pushed the pace, and would eventually get the stop in the second round. Then the always hated Clarence Brown, was choked out by Melvin Giron. After some taunting from Brown, Giron was able to land some solid kicks, and eventually get Brown to the ground where he would finish with a rear-naked choke.
The first pro fight on the card put rising prospect Adrian Yanez, against debuting D’Neareon Seymore; there seemed to be some animosity between the two leading up to the fight. This fight was almost called off during the day because Seymore felt ill. He seemed to push through whatever was bothering him, and entered the cage. It only took Yanez 1:31 to submit Seymore with a triangle choke. Following up Yanez’s submission, was his teammate Jacob Silva, with a triangle of his own. After a good flyweight scrap between Silva and Albert Tapia, Silva locked in the submission at 4:19 of the first.
Trevin Giles and Terrance Ferguson came out landing their hands fly, but it was Giles who would catch Ferguson and end the night with strikes on the ground. Next, we had Ray Blodget and “Ox” Jones. There were some good exchanges on the feet, Blodget showing his Houston Muay Thai, but his grappling would earn him the win via an arm-in guillotine choke.
The only fight to go the distance was a barn burner for sure. Former teammates, Charles Cheeks and Edgar Juarez showed mutual respect for one another, but both came to take the other’s head off. On the feet, there were several exchanges were both me landed clean shots, but you couldn’t really tell who was doing more damage. Cheeks would secure the rounds with his wrestling, putting Juarez on his back and landing some nice shots, including nasty elbows. Cheeks would go on to get the decision win.
In the main event, Houston’s own, Edgar Verdin, was ready to welcome UFC and TUF vet, Bubba McDaniel; McDaniel had other plans. Verdin was able to land some hard shots, and even rocked McDaniel, but his experience showed, and he was able to recover in those tough spots. McDaniel was able to get the fight to the mat in the second round, and end the fight via rear-naked choke.
