It’s that time again! UFC 178 is right around the corner, and I am more dedicated than ever to find out who will get me out of debt. I’m currently in the hole two car payments to my bookie, so I did a little more research than usual to keep me from one of those embarrassing moments where I’m chasing a tow truck down the road with my shirt off and one sock on. For instance, I have seen a psychic twice this week, had my aunt light a candle for me at the church, and was able to hack into numerous fighters’ iCloud accounts; I was very impressed. With all the knowledge I now have and my own mother promising to say a prayer that I don’t lose my car, these picks are solid. Psychics don’t just tell everyone that walks into their third floor apartment that they see money in their future, or that they will find the love of their life at an upcoming trip to Mississippi. So, have a look at what my personal psychic, Ms. Jackie, has referred to as a “foregone conclusion”.
135lbs Cat Zingano (8-0) vs. Amanda Nunes (9-3):
Cat Zigano is coming off of a knee surgery after beating Miesha Tate by TKO in April of 2013. After defeating Tate, she was all set up to take on champion Ronda Rousey, until she injured her knee. A win against Nunes, who is also coming off of a TKO win, could easily get her that match with Rousey. Zigano is the favored to win this fight, and I agree. Zigano is a finisher, and I don’t expect to see any ring rust in her first fight back from injury. Zigano wins this one via TKO.
185lbs Tim Kennedy (18-4) vs. Yoel Romero (8-1):
The odds makers have Romero as a slight favorite over Kennedy in this fight. Although Kennedy has more experience and has faced tougher competition, I think Romero’s power will be the deciding factor in this fight; all but one of his fights he has won by TKO. Kennedy is coming off of a victory over Michael Bisping, but it wasn’t very impressive. If he can control the cage and get Romero down, we can expect the same in this fight. But I think Romero will be able to land some big shots early that will set the tone for the remainder of the fight. Kennedy is tough, but Romero will get the KO… and then will be accused of juicing.
145lbs Dustin Poirier (16-3) vs. Conor McGregor (15-2):
Conor McGregor has already been able to reach “superstar” status after only three UFC fights, but Poirier is definitely the toughest fighter he has faced. Poirier is a finisher, with 7 wins by TKO and 6 by submission. McGregor is no slouch either, earning 13 of his 15 wins by TKO, and not having lost a fight since 2010. This fight is sure to be a candidate for fight of the night, and has MMA fans going bananas. Odds makers have McGregor as the favorite, which is why I’m taking Poirier in this one; he’s at +220 right now. I think he can out strike McGregor, but even if he can’t, he can win it on the ground. I’m going to listen to Ms. Jackie, and go with Dustin Poirier by submission.
155lbs Donald Cerrone (24-6) vs. Eddie Alvarez (25-3):
If the Poirier vs. McGregor fight wasn’t enough to give you a fight boner, this fight surely will. Eddie Alvarez is finally making his long awaited UFC debut, and against one of the busiest most exciting fighters the UFC has to offer. Cerrone is on a four fight win streak, finishing all of them. Most recently, Cerrone dominated Jim Miller before knocking him out in the 2nd round of their fight in July. Alvarez has ran Bellator, and has only loss once in 5 years. This fight has all the right ingredients to be one hell of a barn burner, and the winner will be one step closer to a title fight. Odds makers have this fight dead even and it is hard to decide who comes away with this one, but I am going with Cerrone. It will be tough, but he will pull out a decision victory.
125lbs Championship Demetrious Johnson (20-2-1) vs. Chris Cariaso (17-5):
Some people overcome all kinds of trials and tribulations to get their title shot. Cariaso, well, he got lucky. There wasn’t anyone else out there that made sense to give a title shot to, but he could shock the hell out of everyone if he wins. The odds makers have this one at -1250 for Johnson and +850 for Cariaso. So, if you’re felling lucky, bet the house on Cariaso, but I wouldn’t recommend it. Mighty Mouse will be too much for Cariaso, and it will be obvious early in the fight. He gets a lopsided decision win.
