Gerzan Chaw Is Looking To Make A Statement At Texas City Throwdown

This Friday, March 14th, at The Charles Doyle Convention Center in Texas City, Gerzan Chaw (3-3) will be taking on Eric Valdez (3-1) at Texas City Throwdown. Chaw is coming off a tough decision loss to Darrion Caldwell at Legacy 21 and is looking to make a statement Friday night with a victory. After getting started in martial arts five years ago with some free Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes at San Jacinto College, Chaw now finds himself in his seventh professional fight. I talked with the newlywed Gerzan to see how things were going before he steps into the cage with Valdez.

Mark Carrillo: What’s a typical day of training like for you?

Gerzan Chaw: I train by myself in the morning usually, then train at HQ at night; a few hours a day.

MC: How much do you know about your opponent Eric Valdez?

GC: I know his record, gym, and I have a general idea of his proffered way of fighting.

MC: How do you predict this fight going on Friday night?

GC: I see myself winning by an obvious margin.

MC: Have you ever had to use any MMA techniques outside the cage?

GC: I defended myself once at a concert. He was a lot bigger than me; he swung and I took him down. We got separated at that point but it could have been worse. He got kicked out so he wouldn’t mess with anyone else.

MC: How would you describe yourself on fight night? Angry, anxious, nervous?

GC: I’m always excited on fight night. Wanting to get it started.

MC: Tell me, what’s the best thing about being a fighter?

GC: The best thing about fighting is challenging myself, and if I do well I get an immediate reward from it.

MC: Who all would you like to thank for helping you prepare for this fight?

GC: I’d like to thank all my training partners at Bushi Ban and 4oz Fight Club, Master Zulfi and Kru Bob Perez. My wife for putting up with me during cut time. My sponsors Trubloodline Fight Wear and St. Michael’s Emergency.
