David Stern Weighs In On Dan Gilbert’s Letter

I’m not even a fan of Uncle Dave, but I agree with him on this one.

Everyone from Jesse Jackson to Justin Beiber has given their opinion on Dan Gilbert’s emotional tirade via letter to Cleveland Cavalier fans.  Now the one opinion that comes with the most weight will be heard…or felt…in the pockets.  NBA commissioner will fine Dan Gilbert  $100,000 ESPN.com is reporting. Stern called the letter “a little bit extreme.”

Stern congratulated LeBron James on his signing with the Miami Heat last Thursday, but said he would have advised him differently on how to handle the decision. “The advice that he received on this was poor,” Stern said after NBA owners met in Las Vegas. “The performance was fine. His honesty and his integrity, I think, shined through. But this decision was ill-conceived.” Stern also commented that he would have advised James to notify the Cavs organization earlier than he did.

Stern also noted that the NBA would not be investigating any tampering allegations as to how the Miami Heat landed LeBron James and Chris Bosh.  The three discussing free agency amongst themselves is not a violation of any league policy. “Our players, having negotiated for the right to be free agents at some point in their career, are totally within their rights to seek employment with any other team,” Stern said. “That’s something we agreed to. That’s something we embrace. That’s our system.”

Stern also weighed in on Jesse Jackson’s comments about Dan Gilbert’s letter. “However well-meaning Jesse may be in the premise on this one, he is, as he rarely is, mistaken,” Stern said. “And I would have told him so had he called me before he issued his statement, rather than this morning. But he is a good friend of the NBA and our players. Has worked arduously on many good causes and we work together in many matters.”

Now that Stern has weighed in on the matter we can only hope that this chapter is closed.  I am really looking forward to ‘The Summer of LeBron’ to be over and the ‘The Winter of the Golden Triangle’ to begin.

Sidenote: Until the Golden Triangle do a Sportscenter commercial, I think there will be a debate about their nickname.
