Cage Combat 14 Interview with Middleweight Champ Trevin “The Problem” Giles

Trevin “The Problem” Giles is getting ready for his first title defense on Friday May 17th at the Humble Civic Center at Cage Combat 14. “The Problem” is the current Garcia Promotions middleweight champion, and is fighting Gracie Barra Champions’ Chris Sutton. It is sure to be an exciting main-event for the card as these two men try to impose their will on each other. I got in touch with Trevin to talk fighting before his upcoming bout.

Mark Carrillo: Tell us a little about your background. When and why did you get into MMA?

Trevin Giles: Before I started MMA I was a high school football player with aspirations to play for a college. Even though I was one of the best high school football players in the area I never got a scholarship. So I graduated and tried to play as a “walk on” at TSU. At The time the school’s athletic program had a lot of corruption so I ended up not being able to play; as a natural athlete I couldn’t just sit around and not do anything so i searched for something that might interest me and I found MMA.

MC: What are your thoughts on your first title defense?

TG: I imagine that defending the title will be the same for me as winning the title because the process of getting ready for the fight is the same. You get an opponent, you study the opponent, and you train for the opponent. So for me it’s just another fight. My biggest priority is to avoid losing my belt, but it is the same as always and that is to win.

MC: Where do you see your MMA career going?

TG: As far as my MMA career goes I see it going really far. I know that when I put my mind to something nothing can stop me from achieving what I want so there will be a lot of success in my career.

MC: What can we expect from you this year?

TG: This year you can expect me to go pro. I think this will be my last fight as an amateur and I will leave with a bang; but you can also expect to see me get a couple of wins on the pro level before the year Is over as well.

MC: Anyone out there you want to thank before your title fight?

TG: I would like to thank everyone that is planning to come out and support me. I would like to thank Elite MMA for the best training camp I could ask for, and all of the support anyone can ask for. I would also like to thank my family and friends for their love and support, and last but certainly not least I would like to thank God for giving me the opportunity to succeed and just for keeping me safe, inspired, and on track.
